Your website should be completely professional. Never use
frames, limit access to your site by requiring visitors to
already have or download a certain plug-in, have scrolling
pages which require the visitor to scroll sideways to see
the whole page, annoy your visitors with blinking text, pages
full of banners, continuous background music that slows down
everything, pop-up windows, text that's hard to read because
it's a similar color to the background etc., use under construction
pages and make visitors wait.
Create a domain name; it will be always your own unique identity.
With a domain name, you can promote your website instead of
someone else's when you're sending emails, as your domain
name will be in the email address. You are likely to have
more traffic to your website with your own domain name because
more people will return, as they can remember your address.
You can also custom error pages to prevent people from leaving
your site because of broken links and other errors. Search
directories such as Yahoo only index websites with their own
domain name. Create a domain name that is small, easy to remember,
and relates to your business.
You should avoid domain names that already have similar counterparts
online. Aim for the .com version of a name. It may be a good
idea to get a host. You should get one with web hosting features,
good customer service, and a reasonable price. Great benefits
and features include access to your own cgi-bin, a secure
server, logs and log analyzers, lots of email services and
space for your website, and the ability to use FTP or online
managers. It is a good idea to avoid free web host.
